Pope Leo was peppered with questions as he moved through the crowd at the Vatican on Monday, during his first international press conference.<\/p>\n

He spoke of the importance of free speech and a free press and thanked reporters for covering the papal election. The pontiff also emphasized the significance of \u201cbeing an informed society in order to make good choices and decisions regarding international policy,\u201d according to\u00a0NewsNation<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n

At one point,\u00a0NewsNation<\/em>\u00a0correspondent Robert Sherman\u00a0asked the Pope Leo if he had \u201cany message\u201d to give the US to which the pontiff replied, \u201cMany.\u201d<\/h3>\n

He then added: \u201cGod bless you all.\u201d<\/p>\n

The short answer, which many saw as a menacing message from the Pope to the US, caused quite a stir and vent viral in the blink of an eye.<\/p>\n

Plenty of people interpreted it as a dig at the US president whom Pope Leo criticized on the social media as Cardinal Robert Prevost.<\/p>\n

In 2015, when Trump announced he was running for president and promised to \u201cbuild a wall,\u201d the pontiff\u00a0retweeted an op-ed<\/a>\u00a0titled \u201cWhy Donald Trump\u2019s anti-immigrant rhetoric is so problematic.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pope Leo also criticized Vance for an interview he gave about Christianity on\u00a0Fox News<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u201cJD Vance is wrong,\u201d he said. \u201cJesus doesn\u2019t ask us to rank our love for others.\u201d<\/h2>\n

Discussing concerns over the Trump administration\u2019s handling of immigration, Vance\u00a0referenced<\/a>\u00a0a Christian tenet \u201cthat you love your family and then you love your neighbor, and then you love your community, and then you love your fellow citizens, and then after that, prioritize the rest of the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

After receiving criticism on his views, Vance took to the social media to defend himself, writing, \u201cJust google \u2018ordo amoris.\u2019 Aside from that, the idea that there isn\u2019t a hierarchy of obligations violates basic common sense.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ten days later, Pope Leo, as Cardinal Robert Prevost, shared another piece from a Jesuit publication, titled, \u201cPope Francis\u2019 letter, JD Vance\u2019s \u2018ordo amoris\u2019 and what the Gospel asks of all of us on immigration.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to the\u00a0Daily Mail<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em>referring to Pope Leo\u2019s message to the US, some questioned whether he may have misheard the reporter over \u201cany blessings for the United States,\u201d saying it \u201cmakes more sense\u201d given that he told the nation \u201cGod bless you all.\u201d<\/p>\n
