An elderly couple was driving cross-country, taking their time and enjoying the open road. The wife was behind the wheel, focused but driving just a little faster than the speed limit. Before long, flashing lights appeared in the rearview mirror, and she pulled over to the side of the highway.
A highway patrol officer walked up to the window and said politely, \u201cMa\u2019am, do you realize you were speeding?\u201d
The woman, a bit hard of hearing, turned to her husband and asked, \u201cWhat did he say?\u201d
The husband leaned toward her and shouted, \u201cHe says you were speeding!\u201d
The officer, used to all sorts of roadside encounters, kept his cool and continued, \u201cMay I see your driver\u2019s license?\u201d
Again, the wife looked to her husband. \u201cWhat did he say?\u201d
\u201cHe wants to see your license!\u201d the husband bellowed back.
She fished around in her purse and handed the license over. The officer looked it over, smiled a little, and said casually, \u201cOh, Arkansas. I spent some time there once. Went on a blind date with the ugliest woman I\u2019ve ever seen.\u201d
The wife turned to her husband again. \u201cWhat did he say?\u201d
The old man didn\u2019t miss a beat.
