Am I wrong for Snapping at My MIL When She Demanded Keys to Our House?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I (32F) have been married to my husband (34M) for 5 years. We bought our dream home 2 years ago after saving up for years. It\u2019s a beautiful 4-bedroom house with a big backyard \u2013 perfect for the family we hope to start soon.<\/p>\n

The problem is my MIL, (58F). She\u2019s always been overbearing, but things have been escalating recently. Last week, my MIL came over unannounced (as usual) and started talking about how she wants to redecorate \u201cher son\u2019s house.\u201d I corrected her, saying it\u2019s OUR house, but she just laughed it off. Then came the bombshell. She looked at me with a sickeningly sweet smile and said, \u201cSweetie, I\u2019ve been thinking. Now that you and my only son have this big beautiful home, I think it\u2019s time for you to give me the keys.\u201d<\/p>\n

I was shocked, but unfortunately, this wasn\u2019t an isolated incident. Every visit, it\u2019s the same story. \u201cOh, my son\u2019s house looks lovely!\u201d or \u201cI\u2019m so proud of the home my son has made.\u201d I\u2019ve tried gently correcting her, but she never gets the hint. What\u2019s worse, she does this in front of everyone. The breaking point came when she said, \u201cYou know, as the mother of the homeowner, I think it\u2019s only right that I have a set of keys.\u201d<\/p>\n

This happened during a big barbecue we were hosting for Jake\u2019s extended family and some close friends. As we were all sitting around chatting after the meal, She suddenly cleared her throat loudly and made her announcement.<\/p>\n

The chatter around us died down as people turned to look. Jake seemed uncomfortable but didn\u2019t immediately shut it down. \u201cUh, why would you need keys, Mom?\u201d<\/p>\n

She laughed, as if it was obvious. \u201cWell, this is my son\u2019s house, isn\u2019t it? I should be able to come and go as I please. Plus, I need to be able to check on things when you\u2019re not home.\u201d<\/p>\n

I couldn\u2019t believe what I was hearing. Jake looked at me nervously and whispered, \u201cMaybe we should just give her a set to keep the peace?\u201d<\/p>\n

That\u2019s when I lost it. I stood up and snapped at She, \u201cAbsolutely not! This isn\u2019t just your son\u2019s house, it\u2019s OUR house. We bought it together, we both contribute equally, and we\u2019re not giving you keys just so you can invade our privacy whenever you want!\u201d Diane\u2019s face turned red with anger. \u201cHow dare you speak to me like that! Jake, are you going to let her talk to your mother this way?\u201d<\/p>\n

To my horror, he tried to placate his mother. \u201cMom, calm down. Maybe we can work something out\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

My MIL saw her opening and pounced. \u201cSee? She\u2019s trying to come between us, Jake! I\u2019m only thinking of what\u2019s best for you!\u201d<\/p>\n

I\u2019d had enough. I turned to her and said, \u201cNo, you\u2019re only thinking of yourself. This is our home, not yours. You don\u2019t get a say in this, and you certainly don\u2019t get keys. End of discussion.\u201d<\/p>\n

She burst into tears and ran out of the yard, slamming the gate behind her. The gathering fell into an awkward silence.<\/p>\n

Later, Jake and I had a huge fight. He accused me of embarrassing his mother and making a scene. I told him he needed to grow a spine and stand up to her ridiculous demands.<\/p>\n

Now Jake is still pressuring me to give his mom a key \u201cto make things right.\u201d She is playing the victim, telling everyone how cruel I am. My friends are divided \u2013 some say I\u2019m right to stand my ground, others think I went too far by snapping at her in public.<\/p>\n

Did I overreact when I refused to give my<\/p>\n

MIL keys to our house and snapping at her in front of everyone? Should I have just gone along with Jake\u2019s suggestion to keep the peace?<\/p>\n
