\u201cMy hubby decided something that rendered me mute. He handed his mother our house\u2019s key. When I learned, I became enraged. We had not decided upon or talked about this. But my mother-in-law grinned at me and said something I will never forget before I could sort my emotions: \u201cYou must have forgotten that I paid for this house!\u201d Her comments really smacked like a ton of bricks. I stood there in shock. When I turned to my husband for help, he shrugged and said, \u201cShe paid for the house, so we can\u2019t say no.\u201d<\/p>\n
I thought I had no power. Though I knew I had to act, I could not stop him from handing her the keys. Not because I didn\u2019t trust my mother-in-law completely, but more because something about the circumstances bothered me, I surreptitiously set a camera in the house.<\/p>\n

Months went by as I attempted to let it go. I then headed on a business trip to another state. Something seemed different when I got back. The home changed in feel. It was subtle, yet I saw little but costly embellishments lacking. My heart fell. I then recalled the camera. When I hurried to review the tape, my world fell apart right away.<\/p>\n
The video depicted my spouse and his mother around our house packing little things. When I approached him, his answer made me still once more. He said his mother felt offended by my first denial of handing her the keys. She was so upset, he said, that she chose to return the presents she had bought us for our wedding\u2014pieces with personal worth for me rather than only ornamental value.<\/p>\n
The worst element, though, is My spouse agreed with her. Declaring I should have showed her more respect, he stated I had overreacted from the beginning and had been unkind to her.<\/p>\n
I find myself now doubting everything. Was I truly seeking too much? In my own house, is seeking privacy and limits irrational? Alternatively have the very individuals I ought to be able to rely most on deceived me?\u201d<\/p>\n
